Knitting Stitch

Knitting is fun!

Welcome to our Learn To Knit pages. Here you will find simple instructions for getting started with your first knitting project. Instructions are given for right-hand, and left-handed knitting.

Knitting is a very easy thing to do. You start out with a number of half-hitches on a needle, and then pull loops through over and over. The only trick to it is to get a good technique that makes knitting comfortable and pleasant. Start your work by slipping a half hitch onto a needle, and then use your thumb to follow that one with a series of half hitches. 14 is a good number to start with.

This style of right handed knitting is often called American knitting. Note how the yarn is wrapped under the large finger of the right hand. Use this finger to create proper tension on the working yarn. The right needle will be used to pull a loop through the first stitch on the left needle. To get ready to do this, slip right needle through first loop from front to back. Needle inserts on left side of stitch.

Wrap the yarn around the point of the right needle, from back to front and then give the yarn a little tug so that it pulls down between the two needles.

All that is just preparation so that you can now slip a loop through a loop. Using the tip of your right needle, grab that new string that is positioned through your two needles and pull it solidly to the front of your work. Then slip the old stitch off.

The goal in learning these steps is to get to the point where you can do a whole knit stitch in one easy movement, but dont get discouraged. In your lifetime you will do billions of knit stitches and it will become second nature to you. Youll be able to do it blindfolded!

Knit across the whole row repeating each knit stitch the same. When you come to the end of the row, turn and do it all again. You are making what is called "garter stitch."

Thats the knitting stitch!
